Whiplash Medical Care
If you were recently involved in an auto accident and are now experiencing signs of whiplash, you may need to seek immediate whiplash medical care.
Because the signs of whiplash can occur anytime after an accident, you may be unable to determine the extent of your injury. Many victims recognize the symptoms immediately after an accident, while others experience no signs of whiplash until days later. It is important to know, however, that the sooner the symptoms appear, the more likely you are to have serious damage.
Although neck pain is the most common symptom associated with a whiplash injury, you may also experience swelling and tenderness in your neck and upper back, and you may have difficulties moving your neck around. Muscle spasms and headaches are also frequently associated with whiplash injuries.
If you think you might have whiplash, you should make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible. Contact 911 or other emergency services if you experience pain in one or both of your arms, shoulder pain, dizziness, weakness, tingling, or are unable to move your arms or legs.
Do not drive yourself to your doctor or hospital if you need immediate care. Wait for the emergency services to arrive so you can be transported safely. The risks associated with neck injuries such as whiplash are extremely severe and, depending on the nature of your injury, a cervical collar may be required in order to prevent paralysis and other trauma. Do not attempt to remove this collar yourself—a doctor or emergency physician will remove it once he or she determines you are no longer at risk.
Your doctor may take x-rays if he or she believes there may be fractures or other damage to the neck. If further imaging is required, a CT scan or MRI may be used. Inform the doctor if you experience numbness, tingling, or other abnormal feelings during your examination.
If you have symptoms of whiplash, it is important for you to obtain medical care to determine the extent of your injury. Contrary to popular opinion, whiplash is a very serious condition that can affect your health and mobility. A whiplash injury can often lead to chronic pain in many patients.
Once you receive treatment for your injury, you may want to discuss your case with a personal injury attorney.
